"I did the One Small Step programme after years of meaning to do something about my finances but never following through. The facilitator did not tell me what my step should be — she asked questions until we found one that made sense for my situation. I set up a single automatic transfer to a savings account. It has been running for four months now. I would not have believed that was enough to mention before, but it changed something in how I approach the rest of my accounts."

"My wife and I were looking at a house in Klang. Several bank officers had explained the numbers to us but we honestly did not follow everything. The Careful Borrower Programme walked us through the amortisation table line by line. I now understand why the early years of a loan are mostly interest. The fourth session on reading the actual loan document was the most useful thing — I had never looked closely at one before."

"We have three children and my husband had just changed jobs. We needed to think through the next few years more carefully. The Terraced Plan took four months but it did not feel drawn out. The printed document we received at the end is something we have come back to several times. It is not complicated — that is actually the point. Specific enough to be useful, readable enough that we actually open it."

"Two sessions seemed short for anything meaningful — I was sceptical going in. But the programme is not trying to do everything. I chose to read my credit card statement once a month, which sounds small but I had not been doing it. The facilitator helped me figure out what to actually look for. A simple skill, but one I was not using."

"The Careful Borrower programme gave me a proper basis for the conversation I then had with two different banks. I was able to ask about specific things in the loan offer letter that I would previously have just signed. One bank officer seemed surprised that I understood the lock-in clause. That alone was worth the programme fee."

"My husband and I had very different instincts about money and it caused quiet friction. Going through the Terraced Plan together — as a joint process — gave us a framework for talking about money that was not an argument. The facilitator was patient when we disagreed. The final document reflects what we actually agreed on, not an ideal scenario."

Participant Journeys
Three case studies from programme participants — names changed, details shared with consent.
Case Study — One Small Step Programme
From avoidance to monthly habit, over four weeks
The situation
A working adult in her mid-30s had not opened a bank statement in two years. She described financial paperwork as something that caused her mild but persistent anxiety.
The programme
Session one identified that the anxiety came from not knowing what to look for. Session two focused on reading one section of a statement — just the summary — and nothing else.
After one month
She had read her statements for three consecutive months and found a recurring charge she had not known about. The charge was refunded after she queried it with the bank.
"I thought I needed a big financial overhaul. Turns out I needed to open one envelope a month."
Case Study — Careful Borrower Programme
Understanding a renovation loan before signing
The situation
A couple planning a kitchen and bathroom renovation estimated at RM 55,000. Three banks had offered different packages and they could not determine which made more sense for their household.
The programme
Four sessions covered how to compare total cost — not just the monthly instalment — across different loan periods, and how fees and insurance requirements affected each offer.
The outcome
The couple chose the package with the shortest term they could comfortably service. They reported the decision felt clearly theirs, made from their own understanding of the numbers.
"Nobody was selling us anything. We just understood the numbers for the first time."
Case Study — Terraced Plan Engagement
A household plan that both partners could use
The situation
A family of four, combined income around RM 10,000 per month. One partner handled all financial decisions. The other felt excluded and uncertain about where the household was heading.
The engagement
Both partners attended all sessions. The listening session surfaced that their five-year aspirations were similar but near-term priorities differed. Working sessions resolved this into a written plan both found reasonable.
Six months on
Both partners could describe the plan's key points. They made one small adjustment together during a review and reported financial conversations were noticeably less contentious.
"There is a document on the shelf that we both agreed to. That changed something."
